Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we say goodbye to our dear mother, grandmother and friend, Willie Harris Stoudt, who died on March 15, 2021, at the age of 92. Willie Lucille Harris was the sixth of twelve children born to Owen Pulley Harris and Frank Harris in 1928 in Littleton, NC. She grew up working on the farm with her siblings, studied at Littleton High School and looked forward to the special treat of an orange in her stocking at Christmas. After graduation, she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked as an executive secretary, pursued a degree in philosophy and economics at George Washington University and offered a safe haven to her sisters as they pursued college degrees as well. In 1958 she married John Stoudt, a patent attorney who shared her excitement for exploring. They embarked on their journey together, moving to New York City for his clerkship before landing in the booming metropolis of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he had found a permanent job at General Electric. There, she raised their four children, enriching their lives with music and art, fostering their spirit of intellectual curiosity, and inspiring them to follow their dreams. She cherished moments spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. There were no limits to whom she considered family, embracing many she met along the way as her own. She spent her later years living with her daughter and extended family. She loved to travel and spent her 91st birthday holding court with her son in Paris, France. She spent the last year of her life dodging COVID-19, including a drive across the country to see all of her children. Throughout her life, she lived the values she passed on to her children: a strong work ethic, equanimity, resilience, intellectual pursuit and compassion for others. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Owen, her husband John, and seven of her siblings, Herbert, Harvey, Anne, Mamie, Maude, Marjorie and Bertha. She is survived by her children, Nancy Stoudt and husband Cliff Whitehouse, Leslie Stoudt and husband Carl Nagle, Harris Stoudt, and Matthew Stoudt and wife Brenda "Bella" Spivack. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Ryan, Alex, Emily, Matthew, Tennyson and Mila, her extended family, Hannah, Zara and Rykeir, and by her four siblings, Virginia, Dorothy, Erma, and Robert. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity or to College Track (https://collegetrack.org) in Willie's name.
