Obituary

Roland Thomas "Chuck" Floyd, age 74, peacefully departed this life at his residence on June 7, 2025. We find peace in the belief that he has been healed and now resides in the presence of his Heavenly Father. Chuck was born on July 26, 1950 in Roanoke Rapids to the late Raymond and Erline Floyd.

Chuck was born and raised in Roanoke Rapids where he was a lifelong member of South Rosemary Methodist Church. He graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School as a member of the Class of 1969. Following his graduation, he established his own business, DeCar, which he operated for fifty-five years. Throughout his career, he utilized his skills in upholstery and auto body repair. Several of his furniture pieces were featured in Upholstery Magazine. His commitment to his craft and time spent in his workshop were passions he pursued until his final days. In 1988, Chuck began employment with the Virginia Department of Correctional Education where he taught upholstery to inmates while working to obtain his teaching degree from James Madison University. He left a lasting impression on many inmates, evidenced by the visits he received from them during his extended hospital stay.

In addition to his expertise in upholstery and furniture craftsmanship, Chuck possessed a notable passion for music. He played the bass guitar and provided vocals for the band known as the Brym-Mars. The group frequently traveled along the North Carolina coast, performing beach music. Chuck generously shared his musical talents with his church community during Sunday services. He and Nancy enjoyed attending concerts and listening to beach music bands together.

Chuck harbored a deep interest in antique automobiles. He and Nancy participated in numerous car shows together. He dedicated his free time to the restoration of several of his cherished antique vehicles. His meticulous work on these cars earned him multiple awards at antique car exhibitions.

Chuck dedicated many summers to the enjoyment of time on the beach at Nags Head and spent many days on the lake with his sons and grandchildren. He took great pleasure in serving as Pop Pop and in the moments shared with his grandchildren. Additionally, he was a supporter of Duke University and thoroughly enjoyed attending games at Cameron Indoor Stadium with his family.

Chuck is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-three years, Nancy Floyd. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with family and friends on August 14, 2021. Together, they experienced the joy of raising two sons; Roland "Tom" Floyd (Shannon) of Garner, North Carolina and John Floyd (Mallory) of Morehead City, North Carolina. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Cindy Robinson (Roy) of Stedman; five grandchildren, Cameron, Caroline, Cole, Emersynn, Andi, and one on the way, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service honoring the life of Chuck will be conducted on Thursday, June 12, at 3:00 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. The family will receive guests prior to the service beginning at 1:45 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.
