Otis Nathaniel "Nat" Vaughan, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
He was born on January 11, 1937 in the small community of Dolphin in Brunswick County, Virginia as the only child of Tilman Kline Vaughan and Nellie Thomas Vaughan Edwards. He was preceded by his wife, Judith M. Vaughan.
Nat moved to Weldon in 1943 at the age of six years old. Shortly after, he joined the Weldon Baptist Church and was a member for 80 plus years, where he served God and the church in many capacities including Deacon and Church Trustee. In 1958 he went to work at Coastal Lumber Company and was employed there 32 years until 1990 as a forester. In 1990 he worked at Roanoke Lumber until late 1992. In late 1992 he started his own forestry services company; Southern Land and Forest, Inc. and was involved with the company even in retirement until his death. Nat's lifelong love for Weldon was never ending as he served as a town commissioner for 23 years. In recent years he was active in the Weldon in Action. During his life he was on many boards of directors for numerous organizations.
He was also involved in coaching youth athletics, coaching both basketball and baseball in Weldon and at Halifax Academy. In 2016 he was inducted into the Roanoke Rapids Youth Baseball Hall of Fame for leading the 1972 Senior League All Stars to the State Championships for both North Carolina and South Carolina. Greatly respected by his former players, he was always proud of their accomplishments as adults.
As an avid NC State fan, he was a season ticket holder for over 50 years for football and men's basketball and even attended the basketball games as recently as the 2024-25 season.
He was also extremely proud of his greatest accomplishment, which was his family, always relishing the time spent with them.
