Nancy Durrett Moore Freudenthal passed away on May 26, 2026 at her home in Boerne Texas at the age of 93. Nancy was the daughter of Robert Edward and Polly Durrett Moore.
Nancy was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 15, 1933. The family later moved to New York City where she attended and graduated from Friends Seminary.
After graduation from Friends, Nancy moved to Fort Worth, Texas to live with her dear Aunt Bessie and “Unkie" (Elizabeth and E.L. Ross). While there, she met Giles C. Clegg, Jr., a dashing young Texas A&M cadet. They married and had 3 children, Steve, Karen, and Rick. Nancy and Giles divorced in 1967 and she moved to Houston, Texas where she excelled as a travel agent with Neiman Marcus Travel Service. She enjoyed the perks of the industry and traveled extensively.
In 1977, Nancy married Mert Freudenthal and relocated to New Orleans where she co-owned a travel agency. A breast cancer survivor, she was a founding board member and President of the Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force. She and Mert designed and built a home and enjoyed taking their boat out on Lake Ponchartrain and participating in Mardi Gras festivities.
In 2001, Nancy and Mert returned to Houston. There, she reconnected with old friends and was a President of the Docents at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed leading tours of the church and particularly loved the stunning stained glass windows. She also volunteered with Angel Flight, assisting cancer patients traveling to and from MD Anderson Cancer Center. Nancy and Mert eventually relocated to the Hill Country of Texas to be closer to family. She died of natural causes at the age of 93.
Nancy loved and was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She deeply missed her son Rick, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mert L. Freudenthal.
Nancy was very proud of her North Carolina heritage, including her father, Robert E. Moore who grew up in Weldon and her grandmother, Elizabeth Campbell Moore, who was from a family prominent in the area prior to the Civil War.
Graveside services will be held on October 24, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery, Weldon, NC with the Rev. Sonny Browne officiating. Family and friends will gather afterwards for a private gathering at the home of James E. Moore to remember and celebrate Nancy’s life.
The family asks that you honor her memory by holding your own family tight and perhaps donating to an animal rescue or shelter or to Chowan University.
