IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Futrell
Johnson
December 18, 1927 – January 14, 2026
Margaret Starr Futrell Johnson, 98, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. She was born on December 18, 1927, to William Jordan Futrell and Betty Joyner Futrell on the Alex Futrell Farm near Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church in Conway, NC.
Margaret spent her entire life in the Ashley’s Grove community—a place she dearly loved. Affectionately known as “Gaggy” by her grandchildren and many others, she brought warmth and kindness to everyone she met. At the age of ninety, she moved to Jackson to be closer to her daughter and family.
She was the beloved wife of Glenn Magus “Stumpy” Johnson. Married for 64 years, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and dedication until his passing in 2013.
A lifelong member of Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church, Margaret was its oldest and longest‑living member. Throughout the years, she served in numerous roles and on many committees, always giving generously of her time and talents. She graduated from Woodlard Onley High School in 1944, where she proudly participated in the Beta Club.
Margaret was truly a farmer’s wife in every sense—devoted, hardworking, and steadfast. She and Glenn worked side by side to support their family. She also enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a bookkeeper with H.L. Evans and Sons Gas Company in Murfreesboro, where she worked for more than 20 years.
A woman of remarkable talent, Margaret loved to crochet, quilt, paint, and sew. Every piece she created reflected her eye for detail and her pursuit of perfection. She was a beautiful lady, both inside and out, and her sweet personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Margaret was also cherished for her cooking. Her family adored her meals—made with love, tradition, and the kind of comfort that only a mother and grandmother can provide. Her dishes became a beloved part of every gathering and a treasured memory for those she leaves behind.
She was the last of her generation, the final living grandchild of William Alexander Futrell and Margaret Ann Futrell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her granddaughter, Amanda Starr Gay; her son‑in‑law, William Marvin Gay; and her siblings Elliott Futrell, Alvin Futrell, Clyde Futrell, and Louise F. Warrick.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Starr Johnson Boone, and husband William Thomas Boone Jr.; her son, Glenn “Bunky” Magnus Johnson Jr., and wife Ilona; her grandchildren Charity Elizabeth “Betsy” Gay Morris and husband Jason, along with their children William Henry Hatchett Morris and Elizabeth Scott Morris; Brooke Johnson Bullard and husband Joe; Michelle Ingrid Priest and daughter Kendall Madison Priest; and Tyler Michael Priest and wife Sara and their daughter Cameron.
Also surviving are her sisters‑in‑law Nettie M. Futrell, Alta J. Lane, Mildred J. Brown and husband Brandt, Pearl J. Daniels and husband John, Mary J. Ledden and husband Charlie, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Sam Grist officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Northampton Health and Rehab in Jackson.
