IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James William
Spragins
March 9, 1941 – December 19, 2024
James William Spragins passed from this earth to be with God on Thursday, December 19, 2024. He was born on March 9, 1941, the son of Melvin and Mary Spragins of Vaughan, NC. James attended Littleton High School, grades 1-12, where he played football and basketball, won a talent show singing Elvis songs while MJ played guitar, and he drove bus #14. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda, in 1959 and now joins her in heaven. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before her passing on May 26, 2022.
James grew up in rural Warren County, working in tobacco, cotton, and corn on his family and neighboring farms. He learned to work on cars at Harris's Garage in Vaughan and pumped gas at Elmo's Service Station in Littleton. He attended Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, but left to marry and begin work at Newsome Oil Company. He worked there for fifteen years before becoming a national salesman for York, Weatherking, and Tempstar. He was honored as the national top sales associate in 1986 with a Rolex watch that he wore with pride. James was a citizen of Roanoke Rapids, NC, participating in the Jaycees. He worshiped with his family at Rosemary United Methodist Church where he taught the teen Sunday school class and coached the church boys' softball team to many victories and championships. In 1992, he and Linda bought a beach home where they retired and attended Ocean View United Methodist Church. They returned to Littleton, NC to renovate Linda's childhood home as a base home for visiting family and friends in Halifax and Warren Counties.
James will be missed for his unconditional love of family and friends, especially the lifelong friends from Littleton High School. He so enjoyed helping plan the reunion weekends held in Littleton. James was a southern gentleman, always polite, opening doors for others, carrying a cotton handkerchief, and singing "Happy Birthday" to family members year after year.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Tony) and Dr. Beth (Don); his grandchildren, Dr. Sarah Maness, Addison, and Maylin; and his brother, Larry (Betty, Shane, and Wesley). A sacrament of burial will be held at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Littleton, NC officiated by Jimmy Tickel on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 12:30 PM, followed by a gathering at Blue Jay Bistro.
Attendees are asked to write down a memory of James to share in the family's memory book.
