July 23, 1942 – October 9, 2022
James Lee Hummel Jr. (Jim) passed away early in the morning on October 9th, 2022 at the age of eighty. He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to James Lee and Ruth Hummel.
He graduated in 1960 from Johnstown High School and afterwards enlisted into the United States Air Force. In 1965 he was honorably discharged and returned to his hometown and began working for the Bethlehem Steel Company.
He was an active member of the Elks Lodge #175 in Johnstown, PA, where he served as Exalted Ruler from 1976-1977.
He and his family survived the Johnstown Flood in 1977. In 1985 he moved to North Carolina with his family and began working at Georgia Pacific in Skippers, Virginia. He retired from GP in 2009.
He loved watching sports, especially football and was a lifetime loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, capable of becoming very animated while watching many of their games.
Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending holidays with his family, especially Christmas. He was gifted with a wonderful sense of humor remembered by everyone who knew him and treated everyone he met with care and respect (even Browns and Cowboys fans).
He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a granddaughter, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in- law as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, a brother and their spouses.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke Rapids.
Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at Askew Funeral Service in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
