Obituary

On April 26, 2021, Sara Isabel di Iorio Cáceres died peacefully at her home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with her family by her side, following a long illness. Her husband, retired surgeon Marco Antonio Cáceres Rivas, lovingly cared for her for several years. She was 86. Isabel is survived by her husband of 63 years; her son Marco Antonio, Jr., and his wife Barbara; son Victor Marcíal and his wife Susan; son Juan Pablo and his wife Michelle; and daughter María Isabel and her husband Mario Umaña. She also is survived by her eight grandchildren—Madeleine, Alessa, Nicolas, Emma, Alexander, Gabriela, Elisabeth, and Christian—who knew her affectionately as their "Nonna." The daughter of Vittorio and Sara di Iorio, Isabel was born in the town of Roccavivara, Italy. Her family emigrated to Honduras when she was two months old. With her siblings Gloria and Vicente, Isabel grew up in the city of La Ceiba and on banana plantations along the Honduran Caribbean coast. During high school, Isabel spent time in New Orleans, LA, at St. Joseph College, where she learned English. She earned her accounting degree in Honduras. Isabel later worked for the World Health Organization in Tegucigalpa. She married Marco in 1957. In 1963, Isabel and her family moved to the United States where her husband pursued his surgical training at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and she worked in the university hospital's medical records department. The Cáceres family later moved to Norfolk, VA, where Isabel continued her medical records work at King's Daughters Hospital. In 1971, the family moved to Emporia, VA, where her husband began his surgical practice. She made many cherished friends there before settling in Roanoke Rapids, NC in 1975. Isabel was a loving wife, mother, and humanitarian. She touched many lives with her kindness and generosity. A parishioner of St. John's Catholic Church, she devoted herself to local charities, most notably the Union Mission. For many years, Isabel organized an annual Christmas party known as the "Angel Tree," which provided gifts to underprivileged children. In 1990, the Roanoke Rapids Exchange Club recognized her efforts with the Book of Golden Deeds Award. Later, she received the North Carolina Governor's Volunteer Service Award. During her frequent travels to see family in Honduras, Isabel supported several orphanages and participated in hurricane relief efforts. The Cáceres family wishes to thank Isabel's compassionate caregivers—Twana, Karen, Becky, and Maribel, and the Community Home Care and Hospice staff. The family expresses deep gratitude to Mable Squire, who gave Isabel more than four decades of close friendship, love, and dedication. There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Isabel's memory to St. John's Catholic Church at 115 E 9th St, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, or Community Home Care and Hospice of Roanoke Rapids at 525 Becker Dr, Ste A, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
