ROANOKE RAPIDS – Evelyn M. Given, Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, while in hospice care at Pine Forest Nursing Home in Woodland, NC.
Evelyn Given was preceded in death by her husband, Jack M. Given; her brother, Albert Mosley; and her parents, Sarah and Albert Mosley.
Evelyn was born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi. After graduating from college at Mississippi State College for Women, she went on to work at the local radio station in Columbus. From there she worked for the State Employment offices in Cleveland, MS and Vicksburg, MS. She was then offered and accepted a position in Washington, DC, where she worked for a congressman and then a senator. That is where she met her husband, Jack, of 54 years. From there she went on to work at the old P.O. Building in Washington for the Department of the Army. When her husband was transferred to San Diego, she worked in various administration roles. After a few moves, they ended up in Mount Vernon, Ohio, where she worked for Kenyon College for one of the deans and then spent the years before retirement working for the Knox County Board of Education.
She is survived by her children, Michael Roe Given of Fredericktown, Ohio; Katria Michelle Weyl of Lexington, SC; Mark Blaine Given of Roanoke Rapids; and Phillip Albert Given of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; a stepson, Jack M. Given, Jr.; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the care of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 901 Park Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC, 27870 on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 4:00 PM. There will be a private burial at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
