Ernest Carl Witt, 76, devoted son, loving friend, teacher, historian, and servant of God, passed over to the Lord on August 30, 2021 at his home in Jackson, NC.
Born on June 4, 1945 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Carl was the son of Ernest Leroy Witt and Louise Daughtry Witt and the grandson of Walter Vance Daughtry and Jessie Holloman Daughtry. He grew up at Daughtry's Crossroads, NC where his family first arrived in 1787, and lived his entire life in Northampton County.
Mr. Witt attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC and Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies in 1967.
Mr. Witt was employed as a high school teacher at Northeast Academy in Lasker, NC for over 40 years where he taught history and social studies. He also supervised production of the school's yearbook, the Challenger, and directed the high school choir. He retired from teaching in 2010.
Mr. Witt had an in-depth knowledge of local and state history. Always active in documenting and promoting local history, he served as Chairman of the Northampton County Bicentennial Committee and edited Northampton County's history, Footprints in Northampton, published in 1976. He helped organize the Town of Jackson walking tour and was a passionate advocate for preserving and maintaining the historic Northampton County Courthouse. He was a member of Pendleton Masonic Lodge #418 A.F. & A.M.
As a faithful Episcopalian, Mr. Witt put his musical talents to good use at Church of the Saviour in Jackson, NC where he a dedicated member, served periodically as senior warden, and was the organist for over 40 years.
Mr. Witt was widely traveled and enriched his personal and professional development with first-hand knowledge of the many places he visited. During his long career as a professional educator, he always encouraged the value of learning and civic pride. Northampton County is a better place due to his talents, skills, and dedication.
Mr. Witt is survived by many cousins and the hundreds of well-taught students that he befriended and mentored.
A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held at Church of the Saviour on Friday, September 3 at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Richard Galloway followed by interment at the Lasker Town Cemetery.
