Elijah "Tony" Lawrence Williams, 90, of Halifax, NC, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Halifax County on March 4, 1931, to the late William Bryan and Avis Dickens Williams and was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Aycock Williams, his brothers, Wayne and Paul Williams, and his sister, Janice Cooke.
Tony was a decorated United States Army veteran serving in the Korean War. For his acts of bravery and service, he was awarded a Bronze Star after risking his life for three wounded comrades and two Purple Hearts for wounds inflicted in battle.
After his retirement from the US Postal Service, he continued to spend much of his time outdoors. Tony especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved his family and spent time with them at every opportunity, whether visiting on a Sunday afternoon or spending a day in the woods or on the water. He was a cheerful giver, giving back time and resources to those in need. Mr. Tony was a well-loved member of Elam Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Jeff Williams and his wife, Kathy, of Roanoke Rapids, Bryan Williams and his wife, Shannon, of Gumberry, and his three grandchildren, Jessica Williams and her fiancé, Adam Fetters, Kelly Williams, and Eric Williams.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 6:00 until 7:30pm at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services, 731 Roanoke Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 10:30am at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon, NC. Services will be officiated by Pastor Bill Payne.
Military honors will take place during the service.
