On November 6, 1931 Edward Hudson Bishop was born to Jacob Monroe and Margaret Martha Bishop in Baylor Hospital in Dallas Texas. Ed was the third child of five born to the Bishop family; three girls and two boys. The first 12 years of his life was one of constant moving from one location to another due the nature of Jacob's job as a masonry contractor so to that point no roots had been established. In 1944 the family located in Durham, North Carolina to work on the construction of Camp Butner Army Base, a project vital to the U.S. Army during World War ll. Ed attended Durham City Schools until 1948 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served at the San Diego Naval Air Station and aboard the USS Staff, a mine sweeper during the Korean War. While in California in 1950 he committed his life to the Lord and began his Christian life. It was during his service on the USS Staff he had the opportunity to teach his first Sunday school lesson which started a long period of 67 years of teaching. After completing his military service in November of 1952 as a Quarter Master Seaman, Ed enrolled in North Greenville College and majored in voice and choral directing and served numerous churches in Greenville SC and Durham NC on a non-paid basis. He also directed the Durham Barbershop Chorus and sang the lead in a barbershop quartet in 1964 and 1965. While attending North Greenville he took a night time job at Steel Heddle Manufacturing Co. as a machinist apprentice. Discovering a natural aptitude for this trade started a long career in the manufacturing industry. Upon returning to Durham, he was employed by Wright Machinery, Corning Glass, Liggett & Myers and IBM Corp. While at IBM he moved from the machinist trade into tool design, then into manufacturing engineering where he served 30 years. Ed was awarded a patent for a touch screen technology process during this time. After retiring from IBM in 1996, not satisfied with doing nothing, Ed joined Hydro Services Co in Durham, falling back on his machinist roots and worked another 20 years before retiring on February 11, 2019. Ed had many interests in his life. In addition to his music interests he also loved wood working and landscape painting.
