Conwell Spurgeon Duncan, 96, of Galatia, NC passed away peacefully on September 29, 2023 at Emporia Health and Rehab in Emporia, VA.

Conwell was born November 22, 1926, in Farmville, NC to the late Rev. J.M. and Estelle Price Duncan.  He was a faithful Christian man who loved his Lord and Savior, served his country, family and community.

"Connie" attended Murfreesboro High School, served in the Merchant Marines and then served in the United States Army.  He retired in 1968 as First Sergeant having served during WWII, Korea and Vietnam.  He was a dedicated member of Galatia Baptist Church.  In later years he also served with the North Carolina Baptist Men's Disaster Relief with recovery and meal preparations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of sixty-one years, Shirley Davis Duncan, his brothers J. Murphy Duncan (Ola and family) and George Truitt Duncan, his sister, Helen Duncan Orrell, his son, George Thomas Duncan and his brother-in-law, Thomas Lee Davis.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his sons, John Gilbert Duncan (Laura), Herman Jay Duncan (Deborah), Joseph Conwell Duncan (Sherry), the late George Thomas Duncan's fiancée, Cathy Slate, all of Galatia, NC; his 2 nephews, his 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Galatia Baptist Church Disaster Relief Ministry, c/o Galatia Baptist Church, 1219 Galatia Road, Seaboard, NC 27876.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM at Askew Funeral Home – Jackson Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at Galatia Baptist Church on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 3:00 PM with Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Justin Rose officiating.

Burial will follow directly after the service in the family cemetery beside the church.
