Clara Isles Harris Godfrey, 88, of Halifax County departed this earthly life, September 28, 2020. She is survived by a sister, Bivian Williford and a brother, Dewey Sims Isles both of Littleton; 4 children; Rita Harris of Raleigh; William Ira Harris, Jr. of Halifax; Miriam and Dan Kent of Wilmington, NC; and Candace and Dan Belmonte of Raleigh, NC; 6 grandchildren; William Ira Harris, III, Ashley Kent and Kayleigh Edwards, Will Kent, Harrison Kent, Daniel Belmonte, Bennett Belmonte and numerous nieces and nephews. Clara grew up in Aurelian Springs, NC and was married to William Ira Harris until his death in 1974 and worked for 15 years in Halifax county at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture which administered farm programs, land allotment and marketing quota programs. She grew up on a farm in and working at ASCS was her way of helping her father, Elliot Isles, her brothers and other farmers in Halifax County while her 4 children were growing up. After she lost her first husband to cancer, a friend introduced her to Horace Godfrey, a Washington Lobbyist who had worked in the Kennedy Administration. She retired in 1978 after she married Horace and lived on Lake Gaston, NC and in Washington D.C. She traveled quite often with Horace who represented the sugar cane growers in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Hawaii. Like her mother Jewel Aycock Isles, she loved being outside, gardening, growing vegetables and flowers and sharing her flowers and vegetables with others brought her much joy! She had an infectious laugh. Clara lived a full life and she is now at peace in her heavenly home! A floating visitation will be held Sunday, October 18, 2020 from 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm at the Picnic shelter beside the fellowship hall with social distancing and masks please. The family will have a private graveside service and a public memorial service will be held on a later date.
