Carol Mae Sturtevant

March 14, 1936 – March 9, 2025
Carol Mae Sturtevant Heaton has been reunited in heaven with the love of her life, Paul W. Heaton, Sr. Carol (aka Nannie) has been loved for 89 years. Nannie will continue to be loved for a lifetime in the hearts of her family and friends.
She was born on March 14, 1936 in Quincy, Massachusetts and left this world on March 9, 2025. Along with her devoted husband, Nannie is rejoicing in heaven with Jesus, her parents, Ira Kimball Sturtevant and Beatrice Blackmore Sturtevant; her sweet sister, Marcia Sturtevant Holden; her granddaughter, Georgia Mae Wells; her brothers-in-law, Charles Heaton and Dave Holden and other friends and family.
Carol graduated from Quincy City Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 as a Registered Nurse. To celebrate her graduation, she traveled to Florida where she met the love of her life in Cocoa Beach. They were married within 6 months in Folkston, Georgia and began an incredible love story that spanned 64 years. Carol and Paul began their journey together while stationed at McCoy Air Force base in Orlando, Florida. Carol worked as a nurse and they began their family.
Carol was a nurse and a mother. Her career encompassed emergency room, labor and delivery, and urgent care nursing across five states. She served in Florida, Alabama, Massachusetts, Virginia, and North Carolina. Carol and Paul semi-retired and made a final move to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina where Carol served as a hospice nurse. Being a hospice nurse was Carol's favorite nursing by far. She said hospice nursing was very rewarding.
Carol loved being a wife and a mother most of all. She volunteered many summers as a camp nurse at Camp Highroad in Middleburg, Virginia. Carol enjoyed participating in the Wakefield Forest Theatrical Players at the local elementary school in Annandale, Virginia. She was also very devoted to her Christian faith and served as a team member for many Emmaus Walks in Blackstone, Virginia. Carol and Paul also enjoyed helping on mission trips. She especially enjoyed helping out in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.
Left to carry on her legacy are her loving sister, Judy and husband, Cliff (Norwell, MA); her loving sister-in-law, Jo (Pelham AL); and her devoted children, Paul, Jr. (Roanoke Rapids, NC), Gary and wife, Beth (Strasburg, VA), Alan (Roanoke Rapids, NC), Sandra and husband, Paul (Virginia Beach, VA).
She was Aunt Carol to her nieces and nephews (Jet, Glynda, Stacey, Chuck, Jill, Darci, Jennifer, Wendy, Amy, and Megan) and Nannie to her 11 grandchildren (Kenny, Michelle, Amanda, Julie, Clara, Greg, Mindy, John, Georgia, Kelly, Leslie) and 15 great-grandchildren (Morgan, Wesley, Connor, Olivia, Scarlet, Gibson, Anderson, Vera, James, Sylva, Jesse, Liam, Maya, Mikey, Ellie).
Rev. Dr. Jerome Smith of Littleton United Methodist Church will preside at a graveside service on Carol's birthday in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Friday, March 14, 2025 at 5:00 PM.
