After battling the effects of multiple strokes, dementia, and in her last days, a broken hip, Addie Mae Butler crossed over to her heavenly home on September 16, 2021. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Addie Mae was the daughter of Rudolph and Ellie Mae Wiggins. She was born on February 27,1925, in Timmonsville, South Carolina. As a child, growing up on a farm, she learned the value of hard work, deep love for family, and most importantly, devotion to Jesus Christ.
After graduating from high school, she attended business school in Florence, South Carolina, and worked for Life of Georgia. Years later she was employed by Craven County Regional Hospital in the accounts payable department.
Addie Mae married Henry James Butler on October 1, 1955. She and Jim enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, and after retirement, traveling. They had two daughters, Caroline and Maria.
Addie Mae was an active member of First Baptist Church in New Bern,
North Carolina, for thirty-nine years. She was involved in Sunday School and WMU, helped prepare church suppers, and sang alto in the sanctuary choir. After moving to Whitakers, North Carolina, she became a member of Hickory Baptist Church.
Addie Mae will be remembered for her gracious smile, high heel shoes, strong will, and delicious cooking. Memories of her homemade biscuits and made from scratch cakes will leave mouths watering for years to come! Preparing meals for her family gave her such purpose, and the resulting compliments filled her with joy. Cooking for others was her way of showing love. From beginning to end, her life reflected true southern charm and grace.
Addie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband. She leaves behind two daughters, Caroline Boyd and her husband, Mike;
Maria Watson and her husband, Orpha Gene. She is loved by six grandchildren: Ryan, Graham, Patrick, and Nicholas Boyd and their wives; Phillip Watson and Mary Kate Lanier and their spouses. She also had the joy of loving ten great grandchildren with one more on the way as well as many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate a life well lived will be held Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 5pm at Hickory Baptist Church in Whitakers, North Carolina. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. She will be buried at Elim Baptists Church in Timmonsville, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Nash UNC Health, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, North Carolina 27804.
